Ground Breaking for House No. 11

Breaking Ground on House No. 11 with Shovels in Hand.
Habitat for Humanity of Pike County broke ground Saturday March 31 to begin building their 11th house.
Thanks to the generosity of donors from every walk of life, the United Way of Pike County is able to allocate monies every year to help human service agencies in Pike County provide critically needed assistance to many of its citizens. One of these agencies is Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer labor and donation of monies and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of homeowner/partner families.

Habitat for Humanity of Pike County broke ground Saturday March 31 to begin building their 11th house. There were many extended family members and volunteers present. Construction will begin in two weeks with the expected completion in September. The families are expected to work on their homes and maintain a Habitat mortgage for 20 years. In the close picture, Neil Neilsen president of HFHPC directs the Michelle, Lizzie, Peter and Milessa to ceremonially break the ground. Refreshments were served so all could meet and greet the newest Habitat family. Habitat presently has two lots available for building, one in Fawn Lakes and one in Sunrise Lakes, and is accepting applications for homeowners now!

Pike Habitat, Pike Builders Build Ramp

Habitat Volunteers Cutting Wood
Pike County Habitat for Humanity volunteers Art Lynch, Jim Larivile, Dave Keizer, Mike Donlon and Burt Weinstein along with John Bensen, a local construction contractor, brave single digit weather to construct a wheelchair access ramp at the home of Sandra and Thomas Cortright Sr. near Greeley. Thomas has a 100 percent service connected disability. He recently spent several weeks in the hospital and a nursing home following complications from diabetes and could not come home until the ramp was built. The couple had applied to the Veterans Administration for a grant to build the ramp and make a bathroom in the home accessible but were turned down. “(Habitat for Humanity) saved us from having to pay out money we don’t have,” Thomas said. The project was a team effort with the Pike County Builders Association and member Hogan Homes helping to organize the project. The materials were donated by 84 Lumber, Narrowsburg Lumber, Independence Home Center, Strober Building Supply. Eastern Propane provided temporary heat during the project and Shur-Way Food Mart provide lunch for the volunteers. HFH is looking for volunteers, donations and families interested becoming residents in homes built by HFH. For more information call 570-828-1623, e-mail hfhpc@ptd.net or go to www.hfhpc.org.
